The birth of the New York State Lottery
The New York State Lottery started in the 1960's. Oh well, the state was going bankrupt at the time, and the legislature was looking for money everywhere except from raising taxes. One "unconventional" way of paying for education was through a state lottery, and this idea caught on with the legislature and the public as a whole.

New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed the lottery bill into law on August 30, 1966, establishing the New York State Lottery. Actually the first ones sold on June 16, 1967, and the first one was drawn August 1, 1967. It was my first NY lottery and it cost 50 cents a week for a ticket and the pot was 50 thousand dollars.

The New York State Lottery has now erupted into hundreds of games and raffles and what seems to be millions of prizes for the players to possibly obtain. Those are the "multi-state games" with their big fat jackpots and have caused quite the frenzy among new york lotto players and others nation wide.

Supporting education has always been one of the main goals of the New York State Lottery. It alone has donated billions of dollars to New York's educational system from k-12 schools to public colleges and universities. The lottery money that does go to education has done a lot of good in funding important things like teacher salaries and classroom supplies and building renovations. Not only has the New York State Lottery provided an education, but it has also put food on many tables through the creation of jobs and the support of mom and pop stores. Then there is the lottery, sold in convinience stores and gas stations and the like, they receive a commission for the sales, so that is another way for these stores to make money.
